Where Have You Come From?

Everyday faith

“And (the angel of the Lord) said, “…where have you come from,  and where are you going?” – Genesis 16:8

Alone, abandoned, and afraid, Hagar meets God in the desert. The angel asks her two questions – not because God doesn’t know, but because she can only give a half answer. She knows where she’s been, and what she’s doing, but not where she’s going. God knows where Hagar is going. He knows where she’s been, what’s she’s done, and the blessing He has for her.

Where have you come from? What brought you to this place in time, as you sit on the other side of the computer screen and read this post? Are you running away from something, like Hagar? Maybe you’ve been in the same place for endless years with no intention of changing. Or have you been wandering and unable to find a reason to settle in? God will meet you in your desert place, exactly where you are right now. He’s never surprised by where we end up, or how we got there, or what we did along the way. Believe me when I say this, because I can only write this from my heart. God knows what I’ve done, and what you’ve done. And despite our shame or insecurity or fear, He loves us, unconditionally, and has blessings in store for us if we’re willing to go where He leads.

Where are you going? Will you take time this week to seek God’s will for your next step? He created nations from a slave girl who started her story with no rights or privileges. He can free you from whatever, and wherever, it is that you’ve come from. Let Him meet you in the desert place.

Aww. Yes. The story of Hagar. I always have mixed emotions when I read her story.

I’m so glad I serve a merciful and loving God.

I’m glad my God sees all and hears all. I’m glad I can’t outrun him.
