That cute little face? She’s the reason we celebrated Mother’s Day this weekend. And honestly, she’s the reason I’m learning that I love experiences more than things. She’s the reason I’m grateful we live in a small, quiet town where she’s surrounded by family. She’s the reason I fall asleep on the sofa at 9pm, have learned the fine art of bribery, and put aside my pride to dance at the end of every movie we watch together (yep. during the credits).
I don’t know how often we would go explore the amazing towns and cities around us if it weren’t for her. We have climbed rocks at Gettysburg and gone down waterslides at Great Wolf Lodge. We have colored our way through Crayola Experience and have spent hours debating the merits of dinner at Cinderella’s Castle vs. Chef Mickey.
Some of our favorite local experiences happen in Hershey, PA. On Mother’s Day the incredible Hershey’s Gardens are free for mamas, so we grabbed Nana and Pappy and enjoyed a gorgeous day in the gardens. This time we did the Great Garden Adventure with Madi – the perfect way to keep her entertained and engaged while we walked. She LOVED the children’s garden – and her brand new garden rake that she chose at the end of the day!
We’ll definitely be back, hopefully this spring to see the butterfly exhibit and the gorgeous new conservatory.
And what’s a trip to Hershey without a stop at Chocolate World? They’ve recently renovated the ride – and while Madi still isn’t a fan of the “oven” – it was so much fun to watch her dance to the new songs, see the new characters, and wave to the characters as we rode through. If you’re ever headed through Hershey but don’t have time to go to the park, swing into Chocolate World – it’s free, with free parking! And more Hershey’s chocolate in one place that you could possibly imagine. One of these days I’m bringing home that 5 pound chocolate bar!
We might not live in a big city. We might not have museums or sports arenas in our backyard. But we’re learning that we’re willing to invest in these things, the travel required, the time it takes, because we want to create memories as a family. Stop waiting for experiences to come to you – find small things in your area to do this weekend. Look for ways to plan day trips this summer. Do something new, with the people you love, and get yourself in the photos! Yes, there might be a meltdown or two (we had our share this past weekend). Yes, it will all take more time and energy that you thought. Yes, you might need to go out of your way, drive for a bit, or take a new path.
But it will be worth it.

Looks a beautiful way to spend Mother’s day! I am big on planning experiences with my kids and family too. We are heading to a lakehouse a few hours away the week that school lets out so we can have a family vacation with hiking, roasting marshmallows, fishing, and playing games together. I can’t wait!
