This week the world lost an amazing woman, a friend of mine who shined so brightly for Jesus. I don’t think there is any way to truly explain the lasting legacy Wynter has had on lives of everyone who knew her, but I know this.
Her passion for encouraging God’s girls to get into the Word, to know Him, to love Him, and to follow Him will not stop with her. I’ve had her newest book, “God’s Girl Says Yes” on my desk since I received it, and I’ve been waiting for the day when I can start reading it with Madi. When Madi starts 1st grade, she’ll be taking a little of Wynter’s message along with her, three little pins on her backpack to remind her that that she is God’s chosen daughter. Every time we received a package from Wynter in the mail, Madi would get SO excited, because she knew it wasn’t just another book for mommy – it was from someone who thought about HER! From coloring books to devotionals, Wynter has helped Madi learn more about God – and who she is as His daughter – than anyone else we know…and Madi never even had the chance to meet her.
Last week Madi attended Good News Camp, and I’d just received a new Bible in the mail to review that she decided to take along with her. Mostly it was to make sure her team got the extra points for having a Bible with them, but she also loved how it looked. Give a girl a gold, glittery Bible and she’ll for SURE want to turn the pages!
Although she’s just starting to be able to read on her own, Madi was excited about the beautiful full color images throughout the Bible – and she could recognize the stories they depicted easily. She wanted to show them to me, share the stories, and tell me what she knew about that part of the Bible. I love that it’s the International Children’s Bible translation, which means it’s written for a third grade reading level. As Madi becomes a better reader, she’ll have a Bible to read that she can understand, without getting frustrated or lost. Although I think we will need to make sure we’re clarifying a few things here and there that might be a little over simplified in this version.
To be honest, the images are super cute, and I appreciate that the characters look culturally and regionally correct (as much as an illustration can)…but I don’t like that the images aren’t properly placed near the text they depict. I get it – it’s expensive for a printing house to insert full color pages in the text, but it’s confusing to find images of the nativity and Jesus as a boy in the middle of the book of Jeremiah, or Jesus’ baptism in the book of Daniel.
Also the name of it? You guys. We can do better than the “Golden Princess Sparkle Bible.” That’s terrible.
But, if this is the Bible that helps Madi learn more about God, to fall in love with Him and learn what happens when we follow Him, then this is what we’ll use. And we’ll read Wynter’s books and talk about how she loved others well, and how she used the gifts God had given her to shine the spotlight on Him.
“You can dream big with God because God really does want to do incredible things in your life. But remember that you are God’s idea, so stay close to Him and always be willing to go in the direction He is leading you.” – Wynter Pitts, God’s Girl Says Yes
