Well, we did it! We came to the end of our book club. I loved the accountability to keep reading, to think about Rachel’s stories and how I related – or why I didn’t. Instead of recapping the final two chapters and what I thought, I wanted to leave it open for you to share your biggest takeaways. I have some thoughts on how this book wrapped up, but I do hope you’ll share yours!
My favorite quote from this week’s reading came from the final line of the final chapter: “Get up, right now. Rise up from where you’ve been, scrub away the tears and the pain of yesterday, and start again…Girl, wash your face!”
- What did you think of these chapters?
- Why do you think Rachel waited until the very last chapter to introduce the “Girl, wash your face” line?
- How did you see that theme throughout the rest of the book, even if she never explicitly said it?
So, what’s next?
I thought it might be fun to go through some little parts of my Bible study that goes with “Holy Hustle” – what do you think? It’s an 8-week study called “Work Hard, Rest Well” that explores what Scripture has to say about work, rest, success, and failure. When you pre-order a copy of “Holy Hustle” and fill out the form on my book page, you’ll be sent a PDF copy of the study – BUT you don’t have to worry about having the whole thing to join me. Each week I’ll share a Scripture reading and some discussion questions that we can do together. To be honest, spending time in the Word is probably the only thing that is going to get me through this book launch season in one piece.
If you do want to buy a copy of Work Hard, Rest Well, you can find it here. See you next week!
Chapter 19 was a good one for me. I grew up fairly “sheltered” and living in an area with people who are like me and my family. Not a lot has changed, location-wise, but I do like to think that my horizons have been expanded over the years. I still have my moments of close-mindedness, but often I try to take a step back and look at the whole picture before passing judgment. I like to think that I’m passing on the best of my beliefs to my children in that regard, and I am always conscious of my actions speaking louder than words.
My favorite quote from the book is the one you have printed at the top of this post! Definitely one that makes me stop and think.
I think Rachel used the entire last paragraph of chapter 20 to sum up the book quite nicely! “Girl, wash your face!” wraps everything up in a neat little bow. Throughout the book, each lie that she discusses is accompanied by “Things that helped me…” — all ways that Rachel has “washed her face” of the lie and started fresh.
Overall, I liked the book. There were some chapters that helped me and spoke to me, but I’d say there were more that I did NOT identify with. Still, it is always reassuring to hear from someone else that they are not perfect and they make mistakes and believe certain lies. It’s nice to be reminded, “I’m not the only one.”
