One Word: 2013

Everyday faith

New Years resolutions make me itch. I feel like I’m setting myself up for failure, joining the ranks in the gym who will only last a few months before reality sets in. Or I’ll try to resolve to write more, to push myself to do something the “big” bloggers are doing (a new blog platform, write an eBook, etc.) and I’ll soon realize that .. um.. I’m not them.

So when the lovely Miss Melanie at Only a Breath (y’all, she is as sweet as pie and I wish desperately we lived closer together because she just makes me smile) offered to create free One Word buttons for anyone who was interested, I was intrigued.

The concept is pretty easy actually. Instead of a resolution, you pray about what one word God would have you focus on in the coming year. Something that will be the driving force behind your goals, you family, your work, your dreams. One word that is yours – not a word from anyone else.

I thought about it for awhile. Prayed about it in the shower (true story). Bounced options around in my head until one just stuck.

One word that defines what I need to focus on to make my dreams for 2013 happen.

One word that defines what 2012 wasn’t.

One word that will remind me to keep pushing forward.

What is it?

I commit to my family. To slowing down and being present with Matt and Madi.
I commit to my jobs. To doing what needs to be done to be excellent and glorify God.
I commit to being a writer. To take time to be filled, to be inspired, to share.
I commit to pursuing my God Sized Dream of encouraging women – especially mamas – through writing.
I commit to looking for the light and not letting the darkness win.
I commit to praying when I say I will, and believing that God hears me.
What would your One Word be for 2013?

This is my first time visiting and I love your blog, just reading your words, you sound so fun! 🙂 I love your word and I love how you say “I commit to my family. To slowing down and being present with Matt and Madi.” Oh so true! We should all slow down and be present with those around us. My word is heart, I want my heart to reflect God’s!

I don’t think I’m doing One Word this year, but a few years ago, I chose “finish.” I was chosen Teacher of the Year for my school that year – something that rarely happens to “specials” teachers. I share that just to show what an impact that kind of focus had for me. I think it’s quite similar to “commit.” Finish meant being clear about my goals and addressing obstacles very directly. Finish meant carrying my dishes to the sink when I didn’t feel like it. For a dreamer like me, it helped me become more of a doer. (Hmmmmm…. Maybe I should do One Word again this year.)
