I did something today that I’ve wanted to do since college – help build a house with Habitat for Humanity! The organization is fantastic and it was a privilege to put together a team from work to go help with a build – in our town!
It confirmed a few things:
1. It should not be 90 degrees in September. I was a SWEATY hot mess all day
2. God did not create me to be a construction worker..lol..the poor guys at the site had no idea what to do with me
3. I love working on projects like this that benefit people in my community so directly – it made me feel like I was back in Brooklyn!
4. Manual labor makes me tired, but feels more rewarding than sitting at my desk
I wish I would have had the opportunity to meet the families, but we were volunteering during the “blitz build” portion of the project, so I don’t think they were there to help yet. I think I’ll try to stop over occasionally and check out the progress – I can only imagine how thrilled those families will be to receive the keys to their first home! What a blessing to take time during work to volunteer, to say a silent prayer for those families, and to do something meaningful during a stressful work week. I’m so glad that I had the opportunity to cross this one off my “things to do before I die” list – which, to be honest, doesn’t exist! Maybe I should work on that…
What things do you have on your “bucket list?”
