Behind the Scenes: The Sunset

I turned around to grab my jacket in a rush out the door to beat the daycare pick-up clock and stopped still. The days had been a series of gray, snow, rain – typical East Coast wintery weather. Today, something was different. Gold light streamed through fields and over trees, turning the descending evening into a dazzling light show. Phone in hand, I snapped a few quick pictures, hoping to capture the glory before it faded away.

And fade away it did. In a matter of minutes the light transformed to thick fog, blankets of white covering as far as the eye could see. It was a fleeting moment of beauty that paved the way for gray. It struck me that the Artist of it all could have reversed it. God could have had the fog come through first, followed by sunlight and beauty. Instead He created something so much more beautiful. In reversing the order, I appreciated the fog for the beauty that preceded it, rather than wishing my way through it.

So often I capture these moments and wish that the “behind the scenes” was more beautiful, rather than being thankful for the messy parts that come with the little moments of beauty. I want the mess to come before the marvelous and I  miss the lovely, the life, the cycle of it all where it’s not necessarily “which came first” but that a full life includes both.
