You Can’t Hurry the Holy – A "Holey, Wholly, Holy" Review

Everyday faith

This stunning friend of mine? Kris Camealy? She wrote a book.

And let me tell you one thing right now. You need this book.

If you have ever traveled a season of lent – a time of refinement and removing of self to make room for more of Jesus? You will feel like you are walking hand in hand with this sweet woman as she shares so brilliantly the grace and mercy of the gospel.

Holey, Wholly, Holy shines Jesus. Kris’s love for Him, her honesty, authenticity, and kindness point always toward Truth, even when it’s the hard road. Personally? I never celebrated Lent until I went to college…to Villanova…I was the Protestant girl still feeling so new in her faith surrounded by Catholics who seemed to have it all together. I didn’t understand. I didn’t know why giving up chocolate for 40 days would make you closer to Christ. To me it seemed like a glorified excuse to diet and to puff up your pride when someone tried to offer you dessert “oh no, I gave THAT up for Lent.”

The first time I walked the aisle of my Presbyterian church for those ashes on my forehead, when ground came up to meet my face and my soul was brought down with the weight of the meaning? That is when Lent meant something to me. And isn’t it the struggle – to sacrifice something and make it about Him, when in reality so often the sacrifice becomes about US and we lose Him in all of it.

And even now, going through a personal lenten season, being refined through fire and praying daily for enough strength to take that next step forward – this book brings the journey always back to truth and grace and hope – because none of us our perfect. This Lent thing can make a Jesus loving girl feel even more hopeless…but really, all He wants is us to be empty so He can pour more into us than we ever thought we deserved or needed.

Kris – thank you for walking the refiner’s path beside me this year. Thank you for always answering my Twitter DMs, even during your social media fast. For knowing when I need prayer, or when I just need a friend who understands. Thank you for writing this book to remind me that there is truly an amazing Light at the end of the tunnel.

Yes, he wants us to be empty of the world and full of his love, grace and beauty. Thank you for sharing your words and Kris’ book!
